Controlling The Message

10 August, 2022

We think we have control. We want to have control, especially when we send a message, an instruction or some marketing communications.

The problem is that as soon as the message leaves you, it takes on a life of its own. It will become not about what you say or write but what people hear and read.

Twenty years ago, I embarked on my NLP journey, part of which included learning Presuppositions (if you know, you know).

My clumsy repetition of two seems apt here:

  • The meaning of your communication is the response you get.
  • The person or system that has the most flexibility of behaviour will control the situation.

So, if your message doesn’t hit the sweet point you hoped for, you shouldn’t look to blame the reader. You just need to learn how to develop the way you communicate.
