Constructive Feedback Flexibility

Constructive Feedback Flexibility

28 June, 2024

We think we have control over our communication.

The problem is that as soon as the message leaves your mouth, your pen, or your keyboard, it takes on a life of its own. It becomes not about what you say or write, but what people hear and read.

If you know NLP, you’ll know the Presuppositions, two of which I still refer to regularly about this:

  • The meaning of your communication is the response you get.
  • The person or system with the most flexibility of behaviour will control the situation.

(They are well worth digesting.)

So, if your comms aren’t quite hitting the sweet point, don’t look to blame the audience or become defensive, however tempting. Step back, be flexible, use the constructive feedback as fuel, and develop the way you communicate.

After all, the resulting action of the conversation is the important thing, right?
