Here’s the thing. When it comes to marketing, you 100% have something worthy to say. Yes, you! And, like it or not, you are in marketing. We all are.

I’m not talking about sharing pictures of how you and the team all had pizza today or that someone brought their dog in. I’m talking about proper insight—something that will resonate with an audience.

It’s not prescriptive and doesn’t need to be complicated. You just need two simple ideas to process to get started:

  1. Realise that you’re not talking to everyone. Your audience can be small as long as it is relevant. As Seth Godin would say, look for the smallest viable audience. Ignore pandering to the masses and diluting your message; you’re better than that.
  2. Notice what’s in front of you every single day. You probably do at least one interesting thing each day, several in a month—things worth talking about to your small audience. But you take it for granted. (This is the most common stumbling block I find when I talk to people about content.) If you look at it from the point of view of the customer you haven’t met yet, you may see the value in sharing.
